The Wombats at The Granada in Lawrence, KS

This concert was bursting at the seams with energy from the very start, and said energy steadily increased with each band that took the stage.

The first band to play was a Philadelphia-based band called Cheerleader; this group very effectively fulfilled the role of a “warm-up band”, successfully building the excitement for the main event. Their set was short and sweet so as not to make the concert-goers anxious for it to end so they can see the main act. They were interactive with the crowd and had enough energy and spunk to please the crowd without trying to be the main event. It was obvious, however, that the band currently has a relatively small fan-base and they weren’t very well-known among the crowd.

Though they have a small fan-base, it is not entirely a bad thing; the band is constantly interacting with fans both in concert and over social media which is contributing to the steady stream of new followers and fans.

Next to the stage was the London-based Life In Film. The band was not as unknown as Cheerleader, but still wasn’t necessarily drowning in notoriety. Members Dominic Sennétt and Edward Ibbotson were the most entertaining members of the group and continuously kept the applause coming; they quite literally stole the show with their quirky yet hilarious comments and their seemingly endless energy.

Life In Film was the band that got the jumping, dancing, and cheering started and were the perfect pretense to the main event.

Finally were the Wombats, hailing from Liverpool (it seems that Liverpool just breeds musical talent). The crowd was crazy with excitement before the three even stepped onstage, and The Granada’s intimate setting made it impossible for anyone to not completely get lost in the band and the experience. Every person in the venue was singing along or dancing or both, and the cheers after each song were nearly deafening.

The Wombats sound just as good, if not better, when performing live as opposed to on the radio. The set list consisted of notorious crowd-pleasers, ranging from “classics” from their very first album to new material from their newest work, Glitterbugreleased April 13, 2015, and the songs transitioned from one to the other perfectly. The band ended with Let’s Dance To Joy Division, and left every concert-goer with pounding hearts, sore throats, and smiles on their faces.

Each band put on fantastic shows which left me with major post-concert depression; I can honestly say that this concert is the best one I have ever attended.
